Mission San Jose

History

Old Mission San Jose is rich with over 200 years of history. Old Mission San Jose was founded on June 11, 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen and is the 14th mission founded in California. As a fully developed mission, named after Saint Joseph, the Patron of the Universal Church, Mission San Jose acted as a self-sustaining village.

The site chosen for the Mission had been inhabited by Ohlone Indians for countless generations. The Ohlones lived close to the land, taking what they needed for their sustenance but never wasting irreplaceable resources. The Mission’s lands and resources belonged to the natives, but Spanish law required that they learn the Spanish way of life. Nearly three years after the founding of Mission San Jose, several hundred Ohlones had come to live at the Mission and were introduced to a new way of life by the Spanish Franciscan missionaries.

Today, St. Joseph’s Parish administers Old Mission San Jose. In 2011, CFCS installed niche units inside the Old Mission Cemetery to invite parish families to become a part of the historical Mission while supporting St. Joseph’s Parish.
