The Oakland Diocese produces altar wine from grapes grown at three of its cemeteries.

A look, by the numbers:

  • $500 to $1,000: Average amount a church saves annually by using the diocese’s free wine
  • 3,000: Average number of people who attend Sunday Mass at All Saints Church in Hayward
  • 50: Percentage of All Saints parishioners who take wine as part of communion
  • 3: Number of bottles of sacramental wine used by All Saints Church per Sunday
  • 2006: Year first vineyards planted at Holy Sepulchre in Hayward
  • 900: Number of cases of wine produced last year from cemetery grapes
  • 16: Number of acres of vineyards at three East Bay cemeteries
