Reflection
Jamie Vaughn, OFS

Jesus said to each of the Apostles “Follow me and they did”. I believe those words “Follow me” means detachment from personal interests and attachment to Christ. Implied in the call of Jesus was for me , a personally turning point, from sin to him, in order to be saved. I believe “Follow me” is a call to obedience.

A Memorial Speech in Remembrance of Jamie Vaughn Presented on January 4, at his Funeral by Dr. Ray Chimezie

We have come to celebrate the life of Jamie Vaughn:

• Loving husband to his wife, Elizabeth,
• great friend,
• devoted family member and
• a faithful and practicing Christian.
• We celebrate his transition to Glory in the heavenly paradise.

On the 24th December, 2023, I got a phone call that Jamie was admitted at the Kaiser Richmond in Intensive Care.

• I rushed to hospital to see him
• Elizabeth and I prayed for him
• We prayed the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and kept watch as he passed into glory.

Jamie has lived a life worthy of emulation:
• Jamie will be remembered as loving husband always sharing biblical discussions with his wife.
• Had a typical Christian married union where God was central always
• Kind and compassionate to all people who associated with him
• He was very generous, and never judgmental of anyone
• Peaceful at all times
• Soft spoken
• A man of faith, hungry for discipleship, and desire to serve in the ministry of Christ.
• Until his transition, Jamie served in the parish ministry at St. John the Baptist Church, El Cerrito.
• Jamie was a practicing Catholic
• Fourth degree Knight of St. Columbus
• Lived his Franciscan secular life
• Kept his vow of poverty, daily prayerfulness
• He believed in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
• Loved justice and was against the death penalty

Devotion:
• Divine Mercy
• Time and talents to serve in the vineyard of the Lord.
• Humble and put service to humanity above self-interests

As we remember and cherish Jamie’s life, let us carry with us the lessons he taught-
• Love for justice, selfless service, trust in God, and desire to serve God even in hard conditions.
• With his departure:
Let us all be consoled in the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
'There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die… a time to mourn and a time to dance.'

Jamie lived to do God’s work. God has called him home for the heavenly banquet. This banquet awaits every Christian. May the soul of Jamie rest in peace!

On behalf of the family, I thank all of you who have come to pray for the soul of Jamie. Thanks to St. John the Baptist Church for helping when Jamie became ill.

May he rest in peace and may God lead you all safely to your destinations.

Mary Greene
Mary remembers Jamie for his social justice work. He did a lot of work for the diocese, and he was very concerned about immigrants. She also remembers that he kept up with our older members and would have updates for us on how they were doing.

Michelle
Jamie was so extraordinary, so open to sharing his stories, struggles and journey.

Lyn
Could tell that Jamie was devout and a knowledgeable man who loved being Franciscan.

Kathy
May God's love surround Jamie and may he rest in peace.

Kristin and all of us at St. Thomas More Fraternity - Rest in peace, dear Jamie.

Knights of Columbus
Good morning. We meet this morning to pay proper fraternal tribute to the memory of our brother and Sir Knight James Vaughn. On this sad occasion, we record our last farewell to Sir Knight James and take this opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of one whom Almighty God in His infinite wisdom and mercy has seen fit to call to his eternal reward.

By his fraternalism, his friendly companionship, and his tenure in the ranks of the Knights of Columbus has endured himself permanently in the hearts of his Brother Knights. We have loved and respected him in life and now, let us always remember him in our daily prayers so that Almighty God may have mercy upon his immortal soul. Our hearts go out in deep sympathy to his sorrowing family, his beloved wife Elizabeth, his children; and the many friends he leaves behind. We know their sorrow is a heavy one and we ask and pray that the good Lord in His kindness and goodness will console them.

And now Worthy departed Sir Knight James, in the presence of your friends, family and assembled Brothers gathered here to pay their last respects to your earthly remains, we honor as an outstanding Catholic Gentleman, and a true and faithful Knight of Columbus. We especially honor you with a chalice upon which your name is engraved. It will be sent to some worthy outpost of Christianity, where it will be used during Holy Mass. There you will be constantly remembered as each Mass is said. May its use in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass rebound to your eternal glory, and may the Good Lord grant you eternal rest. Amen.
