Manuel J. Alvarez passed away peacefully on Monday, September 11, 2023 at age 87 in his home in Oakland, CA - surrounded by his family.
Manuel was born in Sandias, Tepehuanes, Durango (Mexico) on August 11, 1936. His parents were Nicanor P. Alvarez and Bacilisa Aguirre; he was the second eldest son of seven children. Siblings include Ignacio, Ofelia, Rodolfo, Consuelo, Baltazar, and Javier.
He is survived by his wife, Emma, and his children Armando, Mark, Rebecca, and Christina. Daughter-in laws Norma and Mary. Son-in-law Greg. His four grandchildren Renee, Orlando, James, and Manuel. And his six great-grandchildren Jillian, Orlando, Christian, Alex, Leanna, and Xiomara.
He worked for Oakland Scavenger/Valley Disposal Waste Management as a garbage collector and truck driver for 40 years. After he retired at the age of 59, Manuel enjoyed staying home, spending time with his family, and working around the house. He really loved his sports – boxing, football, soccer, basketball, baseball – he loved it all!
He was a great husband, father, grandfather, provider, and friend. And he was a father figure to a lot of people, they looked up to him and respected him, and he was happy to be that person.
He will be greatly missed by all and forever in our hearts.
Services will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023.
