It is with hearts full of sadness that we announce the passing of Manuel Tavares on September 29, 2022. Manuel was born on May 21, 1929, in Faial, Portugal, where he met and married Maria on November 15, 1953. In 1959, Manuel and Maria, along with their sons, Fernando and Carlos, moved to the United States, and two years later welcomed their daughter, Dot.
Manuel owned a taxi company while in Portugal, and continued his love of being behind the wheel of his car by taking his family on roads trips across the United States and Canada. Manuel retired from Hudson Lumber after a career of 39 years giving him more time to enjoy his hobby of working on cars, home projects, and watching baseball games.
Manuel loved to share about how he met his wife, raised his family, life in Portugal, his childhood, driving a cab, and so much more. During those stories the phrase, “Oh, grandpa!” followed by a lot of laughter would be heard. Manuel’s dance moves are legendary, his love of life infectious, and the love for his family was what made him the proudest.
Manuel is survived by his wife, Maria Tavares, son and daughter-in-law, Carlos and Nancy Tavares, daughter and son-in-law, Dot French and Jim Korhummel, grandson and fiancée, Michael Tavares and Chelsea Torres, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Natalie and Josh Decool, granddaughter, Brooke Beesley, grandson, Nathan Tavares, and grandson, Blake Beesley, brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Donna Tavares, brother-in-law, Ilidio Tavares, sister-in-law, Maria Pinheiro, and many nieces and nephews. His son, Fernando Tavares, preceded him in death in 2013. His brother-in-law, Renato Pinheiro preceded him in death in 2021.
The family invites you to visitation and funeral services, to be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery located at 26320 Mission Blvd., Hayward.
Visitation - 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Funeral Services - 1:00 p.m.
Committal Service - 2:30 p.m.
