Matilda Clar

Matilda Clar, a 52-year resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2024 in Hayward, California due to complications from dementia at the age of 80.She was born Matilde Sabalvaro Clar on October 22, 1943 in Los Baños, Philippines to loving and doting parents, Vicente Clar and Fausta Sabalvaro. She was affectionately called Teddy or Di by her cousins and extended relatives. When she became an American citizen, she changed the spelling of her first name to Matilda.She attended the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo in Pasig for primary and secondary school. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Commerce/Business Administration in 1965 from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, she immigrated to the United States, where she met Dem P. Cagampan, Jr. From their brief union, they had two children who were born in San Francisco, California.Matilda loved to dance! Always the life of any party, she was a social butterfly and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her three granddaughters. People were naturally drawn to Matilda's enthusiasm, magnetic personality, sense of humor, and no-nonsense attitude. She always left a memorable mark with everyone she met. She liked butterflies, gardening, volunteering at the polls on Election Days, taking road trips, singing karaoke, and watching movies. Her favorites include Grease, Mamma Mia, and Titanic.She is survived by her children, Darlene (and husband, Jose) and Demetrius (and wife, Kim); and granddaughters, Jennifer, Mia, and Alameia.She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Cleotilde Villanueva.Visitation will be from 1:00-5:00 pm with a vigil at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Sorensen Chapel, 1140 B Street in Hayward, California. Inurnment at the Cathedral Christ the Light will follow at a date to be determined.
