Maurice Justin McCarthy

Maurice McCarthy passed away peacefully at his home in Oakland, CA. Born in Oakland on September 29, 1930, Maurice graduated from Saint Joseph’s High School, joined the Dominican seminary and was ordained a Catholic priest at Mission Dolores. He served in the priesthood for nearly two decades before retiring to start a family. He worked many jobs, including teaching and then many years at AC Transit, rising ultimately to senior planner. He took great pride in raising his biological daughters.
As Maurice entered the retirement phase of his rich life, he met and fell in love with his wife Carol. Together they celebrated 22 years of marriage this spring. Their love for one another exemplified the purest form of true love – patient and kind. Maurice will be remembered for his tender heart, wise words, calming demeanor and unwavering support. He was and is beloved and his extended family was a source of joy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Timothy McCarthy; and his siblings, Helen, John “Bud”, Terry, Elizabeth “DeeDee”, Timmy and his first wife Sherry McCarthy (Davis).
Maurice is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Rose McCarthy; daughters, Kristin McCarthy (Jim Fulton), Kyra McCarthy, Catherine Sullivan (Rob Thompson), Kelly Sullivan (Jeff Hodgins), and Evie Sullivan; eight grandchildren, Pamela (Greg), Melissa, Sophia, Wayne II (Cristina), Jimi (Hilary), John (Brianna), Lizzie, and Maggie; five great grandchildren, Eloise, Theodore, Wayne III, Ellie, and Ollie; and two sisters-in-law, Liz McCarthy and Bonnie Rose Wolfe.
Funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Assumption in San Leandro on September 3rd at 10:30am. Committal service to follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Oakland.
