Thomas (Tom) Wayne Pearson

Thomas Wayne Pearson, a man whose life embodied strength, resilience, and boundless love, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2024, in Concord, California, at the age of 85. His children Danny, Tommy and Karen were by his side when he passed.

Born on August 26, 1938, in Hoopeston, Illinois, to Thomas Carrol Pearson and Inez Barker, Thomas, known affectionately as Tom (as well as Tommy, Dad, Pops, and Uncle Tom), led a very challenged life from a young age having lost both of his parents by the age of twelve. His youth was marked by a passion for sports (and mischief), where he showcased exceptional strength and speed, excelling in every endeavor he pursued (according to Tom’s personal version anyway).

Tom embarked on a four-year journey with the United States Navy at the age of 17, where for a time he was stationed in Northern California. It was here fate would introduce him to his beloved Yolanda Theresa Matamoros. Their union on April 2, 1960, in Pittsburg, CA, marked the beginning of a remarkable and loving partnership and marriage that spanned over six decades! Tom and Yolanda were in their 64th year of marriage at the time of Tom’s passing.

After serving in the Navy, Tom worked in a manufacturing plant, worked as an Alameda County Sheriff, a delivery driver for several food companies, sold cars and managed sales teams at Dublin Honda and Fremont Ford dealerships, and started several entrepreneurial businesses from food & wine to construction, painting, and handyman services. He was a man of many trades in his lifetime.

Survived by his devoted wife Yolanda, their three children, Daniel Pearson and his wife Michele, Thomas Pearson Jr. and his wife Carrie LaShell, and Karen Pearson Steele. He is also survived by his five cherished grandchildren Bella Pearson, Alex Dailey, Sophia Pearson Kossak, Cristian Pearson and Lucas Dailey. His sister Judy Wilcox of Angola, Indiana, also mourns his passing as well as cousins residing in his hometown of Hoopeston, IL. Tom leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his family who were devoted to him and loved him madly!

To those who knew him, Tom was more than a man; he was a legend. His larger-than-life personality, coupled with a heart overflowing with generosity, touched the lives of all who crossed his path. Whether through his infectious sense of humor or his unwavering support, Tom made everyone feel valued and accepted. He spent time volunteering at food banks, churches and organizations supporting the homeless. He never hesitated to volunteer for an opportunity to serve food, deliver provisions or lend a hand to those in need. One of his favorite Thanksgiving week traditions was volunteering time on the food line at Thanksgiving at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco.

Family was the cornerstone of Tom's life. He transformed his own experiences of adversity into a foundation of love and support for his children and grandchildren. His commitment to their education and well-being knew no bounds, shaping them into the accomplished individuals they are today.

A lifelong athlete, Tom's passion for sports was unrivaled. From his fervent support of the San Francisco 49ers to his active participation in various adult leagues (softball, basketball, flag football, bowling), he embodied the spirit of competition with a sense of camaraderie and fun. He passed on his 49er passion to his children – and some of the family’s most memorable and joyous moments were watching 49er football games and attending live games together at Kezar Stadium, Candlestick Park and Levi Stadium. He also loved water sports like fishing, boating, water skiing and jet skiing in his adult years.

Yet, it was amidst gatherings with loved ones, whether manning the grill or tending the bar, where Tom found true happiness. His culinary skills and love for good food and drink brought joy to countless family gatherings and neighborhood celebrations. He was the one at the party always talking it up – a master storyteller – and people were naturally drawn to his charm and warmth, and FUN and racy spirit. He was always the life of the party.

Tom also had a passion for gardening, he loved to experiment with different colorful plantings and containers, it brought him relaxation and joy to bring a backyard alive with colors.

In the hearts of those who knew him, Tom's memory will forever remain a beacon of strength, love, and laughter. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he created, reminding us to embrace each moment with the same zest for life that defined his remarkable journey.

The Pearson family wishes to extend sincere and deep gratitude to all those that have been a part of Tom’s life and especially those that helped care for and support our family during these past four very challenging months. We love you and thank you.
